Alabama Week: Thursday Practice Report

ATHENS – Georgia finalized the game plan for their upcoming SEC clash against Alabama with a 90-minute practice session in helmets and shorts at the Woodruff Practice Fields on Thursday.

The Bulldogs (4-0, 1-0 SEC) and the Crimson Tide (4-0, 1-0 SEC) will meet on Saturday evening at Sanford Stadium.

Thursday's practice featured a special guest in United States Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Thomas, the acting Associate Justice of the Supreme Court since 1991, is a native of Georgia who was born in Pin Point outside of Savannah. He spoke to the team prior to the practice after having met with Georgia head football coach Mark Richt earlier in the day.

"He's a very delightful man," Richt said of Justice Thomas, who will attend Saturday's game. "Just in the small time that you're with him you could tell he's a very humble man considering who he is. I really enjoyed a couple of moments with him."

Richt also mentioned that redshirt sophomore strong safety Quintin Banks (knee) had been medically cleared to play on Saturday.

"Quintin is cleared to play," Richt said. "He's been cleared all week, and I don't think he's missed any rep this week. He's been working and trying to shake the rust off. I don't know how much he'll play. That's really up to coach (Willie) Martinez to decide."

In addition to the national television broadcast of the game, ESPN's College Football GameDay will go live from Athens on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon from the quad in UGA's Honors Residential Community adjacent to the Myers, Rutherford, Mary Lyndon and Soule dormitories. Security will begin to allow spectators into a barricaded section behind the GameDay set beginning at 7:00 a.m. Once filled, additional spectators will be allowed in additional areas behind the set, which will feature the Myers dorm as its backdrop.

Due to the staging of GameDay, the quad will not be available for tailgaters to set up prior to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Approximately half of the quad will be utilized by ESPN throughout Saturday. The remaining 50 percent will return to its traditional usage on game Saturday's beginning at 1:00 p.m.
