2006 Fall Camp: Dawgs have final scrimmage

ATHENS – Georgia held its final scrimmage of the fall Thursday, and the results confirmed the Bulldogs are down to a two-man quarterback race at this point.

Starter Joe Tereshinski and backup Joe Cox took all the non-scout team snaps on Thursday, and Georgia will play just those two quarterbacks in the Sept. 2 season-opener against Western Kentucky, quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo said.

"I think Joe T was pretty sharp," offensive coordinator Neil Callaway said. "I don't remember any badly errant throws. I wish he might have been a little more on target on a few of them as far as placement, but I don't think there were any major problems."

Tereshinski directed three drives in his first Sanford Stadium action since being named thestarter five days ago, and the offense scored on all three of his drives, he said. Tereshinski didn't throw for a touchdown but ran for one, he said.

"There were some things you can smooth out," he said. "There always are."

Joe Cox had one touchdown pass and one interception.

Sophomore Blake Barnes and true freshman Matthew Stafford played with the scout team. It would be very hard for either quarterback to make progress from that position because there was very little time to make plays behind the scout team offensive line, Callaway said.

"It would be unfair to evaluate them based on what we saw today," Callaway said.

There were no new injuries in the scrimmage, according to Callaway and defensive coordinator Willie Martinez said. Coach Mark Richt did not meet with the media after the scrimmage so he could attend a scrimmage involving one of his sons.
