Receivers to battle it out this spring

ATHENS – Georgia's football roster is loaded with wide receivers who look like they should be game changers.

There's Kenneth Harris (6-foot-3, 214 pounds), A.J. Bryant (6-2, 195), Mario Raley (6-1, 190), Demiko Goodman (6-2, 189), T.J. Gartrell (6-1, 186) and Michael Moore (6-2, 195). But the statistics page tells a different story.

Rising sophom oreMohamed Massaquoi is the only returning Bulldog who had more than 16 catches last year. (Rising senior Sean Bailey won't participate in spring and may miss 2006 due to a knee injury.)

The lack of production is a new experience for Coach Mark Richt, who was used to seeing a new game breaker at receiver every year while he was at Florida State. He admitted Thursday he misses that kind of player.

"Yeah, you want them, but if you look at our league how many would you say are that?" Richt asked. "I think probably the reason there are not many is there are pretty good defensive players who tend to make them look more normal. I don't know if that's true in all the leagues, but yeah, I'd love to have a guy like that."

The Bulldogs will begin auditioning for a go-to guy at wide receiver and several other positions March 4 when spring practice begins in Athens.

"I think for a true freshman I thought Mohamed really stepped up and played well," Richt said. "Is he a game-breaker? I wouldn't say that, but he's got the potential to be that. Others do, too. There's a lot of potential, but potential will get you beat."
