Flowers & Jean-Gilles SEC Players of the Week

ATHENS – University of Georgia offensive guard Max Jean-Gilles and punt returner Thomas Flowers were named the Southeastern Conference's Offensive Lineman of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively according to an announcement by the SEC office on Monday.

Both players were recognized for their roles in Georgia's 27-14 victory over No. 8 Tennessee on Saturday, which gave the Bulldogs their second 5-0 start in four years.

Max Jean-Gilles, a senior from Miami, Fla., was part of a Georgia offensive line that enabled the Bulldogs to roll up 405 yards in total offense, including 198 yards rushing against a Tennessee defense which came into the game ranked No. 4 in the nation against the run (67.2 yards per game). The line also limited the Volunteers to only one sack as Bulldogs quarterback D.J. Shockley completed 59 percent of his passes for 207 yards.

According to film grades, Jean-Gilles graded out at 89 percent and also had five "Dominator" blocks. Through the season's first five games, Jean-Gilles and the rest of the Georgia offensive line have helped Georgia ball carriers average 5.3 yards per carry. In addition, they have allowed only six sacks in 137 pass attempts.

Thomas Flowers, a redshirt-sophomore from Austell, Ga., returned two punts for 66 yards (33.0 avg.), including one 54 yards for a touchdown, which gave Georgia a 20-7 lead with 8:50 remaining in the game. For Flowers, who currently leads the SEC and is No. 12 nationally with a 15.8-yard average on punt returns, the touchdown was the first of his career. It was also the first touchdown given up on a punt return by Tennessee since former Bulldog Damien Gary took one back 72 yards at Tennessee in 2001.
