White likely out with ankle injury for S. Carolina

ATHENS – Suspensions and injuries might come back to haunt Georgia after all.

Mark Richt announced today that fill-in starting middle linebacker Derrick White has a sprained ankle and his status is uncertain for this weekend's game with South Carolina.

"He did sprain his ankle," said Georgia Head Coach Mark Richt. "I don't think he will practice today. Its up in the air on if he will be ready for the game or not. I am just not certain on that one."

The regular starter at middle linebacker, Odell Thurman, is serving a three game suspension for an off-season incident. That leaves the starting middle linebacker spot open. Richt said there are two candidates for the job right now, however.

"Jarvis Jackson would get a look there," Richt said. "But I don't know who would start. I don't know if Jamario Smith would start or not. You would have to cross train Jarvis and I don't know who would win the job. The guy who understands the position best, I am sure, would be the starter."

Georgia lost another starting linebacker last spring when Tony Taylor torn his ACL.
