Wilson "Playing Catch-Up"

Wilson "Playing Catch-Up"

ATHENS - Ramik Wilson seems to be on everybody’s preseason All-American team, but is the inside linebacker’s place in the Georgia starting lineup assured?

With Wilson sidelined for more than a week earlier this preseason with a concussion, Georgia coach Mark Richt for the second straight day painted a picture of Wilson having some work to do to have his spot nailed down.

“It’s hard to get better when you’re not there,” Richt said Wednesday. “It’s hard to get game ready when you’re not practicing. Unfortunately he was not able to practice and now he’s playing catch-up quite frankly, and hopefully he can get to the point where the defensive staff feels like he ought to be in there doing it.”

Tim Kimbrough and Reggie Carter have seen increased reps with the first unit. Wilson was on the sideline at times when the starting defense was on the field during Georgia’s practice on Tuesday that was open to the media and students for 70 minutes.

“They’re getting better, oh yeah,” Richt said Tuesday of the backups. “They’ve got to.”

Wilson was the presumed starter at inside linebacker with Amarlo Herrera.

“Even those spots aren’t 100 percent decided on who’s going to start inside either,” Richt said. “There’s a lot of moving parts right now that we’ve got to settle in on.”

Wilson and tailback Todd Gurley were named Wednesday to CBSSports.com’s preseason All-American team.

Wilson, a senior from Tampa, led the Southeastern Conference with 133 tackles last season.
