Walk-on Maxey Gets His Chance

ATHENS - As a senior at North Oconee, Maxey got a look from FCS school Wofford but no scholarship offers.

Now the 5-foot-10, 230-pound walk-on is getting first-team fullback reps ahead of walk-on Cameron Faulkner, Payne and Bing-Dukes after Hall’s career was forced to end.

“It’s kind of surreal because I’ve just been grinding away and now there’s this opportunity,” said the redshirt senior who is on track to graduate with a degree in finance in January.

Maxey, from Statham, is entering his fourth season with the Bulldogs after joining the team in January, 2011. His only game action came against Georgia Southern in 2012 as an inside linebacker before his move to fullback.

“It’s a new feeling, one I’m not used to, but I’m really comfortable in the offense,” Maxey said. “I’ve got a lot of reps through the last couple of springs and last camp so I know what do when I’m in there. I’m not looking around wide eyes. I feel good in there.”

Said Gurley: “He definitely stepped up, just this past spring especially when Quayvon moved over to tight end. He’s been doing a great job.”
