Tyrez Young Profile

On a strong team 2013 Laurens small forward Tyrez Young was a glue type of guy for the Raiders. Young has seen his stock rise since the last time we interviewed him and he gave us the skinny on his junior season.

"Well I averaged 15 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, and 4.1 assists."

During a tough season Young says he played his best when matched up against a top flight opponent.

"I think my best game was when we went to the Leon Brogden Tournament in North Carolina and I faced a 6'7 prospect out of Ashley High School. I straight dominated him inside! I scored 21 points, had 11 rebounds, and I held him to only 10 points and it made a big impact because most of my teamates thought I was gonna get beasted but after that performance I drew attention from a lot of college coaches that were there to watch the 6'7 prospect."

"Well to be from a small town like laurens where I'm from we really don't have college coaches to come watch because some have no idea where Laurens is. But the Gamecocks have mentioned me so I think they are looking at me along with Georgia, Lenoir Rhyne, and Ohio also sent me a letter."

Young talked about his status on the AAU circuit.

"I'm playing with the Laurens Pistons, we play in the YBOA league and we have been dominating every team we've played so far. This week coming up we will be playing in Spartanburg to see if we qualify for the nationals so I know there will be college coaches there."

Since the end of his sophomore season Young says he's improved his game in multiple areas. The 6'5 small forward talked about the strides he's made.

"I've learned to become more of a leader and help make not just myself a better player but my teammates better as well on an off the court. My attack game and shooting range increased dramatically. I can shoot the lights out of the ball now and my strength is better cause I go hard in the weight room."

Moving forward Young says he works on staying focused on the game and working hard everyday to continue to get even better.

That work earned him some hardware this past season too as he was named to the All-Laurens County award, Team Captain award, Defensive Player award, and Offensive Player of the Year."

Looking ahead to his senior season next year Young has a course mapped that he's planning to follow.

"I want to be a prospect for the class of 2013 out of Laurens and I want to ultimately be a D1 commit. For the team I want the region and state titles!"
