Recruiting updates at SoonersIllustrated are steadily coming as we look to bring fans the latest in Oklahoma recruiting news. Today, we recap the recent commitment of Scout.com, five-star quarterback Blake Bell for Bishop Carroll Catholic in Kansas. What’s the feeling? Check it out in the SI update.

Sometimes, things just don’t go the way they are originally planned. But many times, going with your gut instinct just feels right. And for Bishop Carroll Catholic (KS) quarterback Blake Bell, that was the case this past week while taking an unofficial visit to Oklahoma.

“When I went down to Oklahoma on Thursday, I wanted to check things out and get a few questions answered."

Bell and members of his family left their home in Kansas at 5:30 a.m. and touched down in Norman at about 8 a.m. He met with the coaches, got a feel for the town, and got to check out practice.

When all was said and done, Bell did not leave until 8 p.m. and headed home. But once they made it back, a family meeting was called.

“When I got home I spoke to my mom and then talked with my dad and uncle,” Bell said. “After the talk, I realized that Oklahoma was everything that I need in a school."

While Bell was on campus, there were several factors that played into his eventual verbal commitment. But one thing he kept a close eye was practice time. He said that he liked the tempo of the workouts and how the work ethic was the type that he was looking for.

And with that said, Bell was watching the entire practice, but was focused on a particular position.

“It’s amazing watching him (Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford) throw the ball. His mechanics were on point and he is everything you want in a quarterback,” Bell said.”

And Bell is all for that as he is somewhat new to the quarterback position. Even though one would not tell that from the numbers he put up as a first-year, junior signal caller. Bell threw for 3,200 yards and 38 touchdowns. On the ground, he had more than 300 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns.

He was set to take several other visits, but with the commitment behind them, there will be no more stops.

“I’m solid on my commitment so there is no need to go to any other places and check things out,” Bell said.

Bell chose Oklahoma over more than 20 offers. Some of the programs were Georgia, Notre Dame, UCLA, Nebraska, Kansas, Clemson, Maryland, Kansas State, Missouri, West Virginia, Oregon, Texas A&M, Iowa, Kansas State, Miami, Nebraska, and North Carolina.

Another trip to Norman is set for this weekend for the annual spring game.
