Vandy Week: Sunday Practice Report

Posted Oct 12, 2009

ATHENS - Speaking on his weekly Sunday conference call with the media, Georgia head coach Mark Richt said the number one goal this week is to put a team together that has the best shot of beating Vanderbilt.

The Bulldogs (3-3, 2-2 SEC) continue Southeastern Conference action Saturday when they travel to Nashville to face the Commodores (2-4, 0-3 SEC). The Bulldogs have dropped two straight after falling 45-19 Tennessee this past Saturday in Knoxville. Vanderbilt is coming off a 16-13 loss in overtime to Army in West Point, N.Y. The Commodores are looking for their first SEC win of the season after losses to LSU (23-9), Mississippi State (15-3) and Ole Miss (23-7) earlier this year.

Richt said the Bulldogs most improve in all areas.

“We’ve got to get better period, on offense, defense and coaching,” said Richt. “As coaches, we have to make sure when we put a plan in, that it’s not too much and that our team is capable of doing what we want to do. We have to motivate them, these are all the things that coaches do. The point I’m making is where we are, it’s a culmination of everything and I’m not pointing at someone individually, we all have to improve.”

Richt added that it was a frustrating day all around this past Saturday but dismissed the notion that there would be a lot of personnel changes on the field this week.

“It’s always going to be a fight for a position and playing time and the reason why we have guys in certain spots is that they have proven to be best man for the job,” said Richt. “We evaluate from week to week, and if guys are not getting the job done, he may move from his spot. It’s not going to be open tryouts. We’ll get back to work and prepare for Vanderbilt and try to get the best man at every position.”

Richt was asked questions on the overall play of the offense and defense this season and maintained it was all part of the big picture for the team.

“Everybody has got issues and problems, whether it’s injuries, youth, whatever, but the bottom line is we have to perform, and we haven’t performed as well as I would like,” said Richt.
