Last season: 7-6
Series Record: Georgia leads 45-14-2
Last Year: Georgia needed a fourth quarter defensive stand to hold off the Gamecocks 14-7 in Columbia.
Most memorable Georgia win: 1980 – Herschel Walker and the Bulldogs best eventual Heisman Trophy winner George Rodgers and South Carolina.
Georgia LB Rennie Curran takes down Carolina RB Mike Davis in 2008.
Most painful Georgia loss: 2000 – With all the hype in the world behind their backs, Georgia – and what’s supposed to be their Heisman candidate – lose 21-10 in one of the biggest upsets of the year. Quincy Carter throws five touchdowns to help the Gamecocks’ cause.
Player to Watch: Steven Garcia is either going to make it work once and for all, or he is going to run Steve Spurrier right out of coaching. Garcia has the ability to deliver the ball on the run as well as in the pocket. He can run the ball effectively, and showed flashes of greatness last season. Still, he has been a liability during his young career – making more headlines off the field than on. Georgia must contain him, as he could be a great equalizer if he gets off to a hot start.
Recruiting Implications: Moderate… sometimes heavy. For the first time in a long time Georgia didn’t sign a player from the Palmetto State in 2009. Still, there are several talented 2011 prospects in South Carolina. Three-star Dexter Morant from Manning picked Georgia a few days ago. Last season was a little weaker than normal in the Palmetto State, but the next two years could produce some of the top players in the South at the top of the heap in South Carolina. Keep an eye on recruiting east of the border as getting a player or two could be a big win for Georgia.
2009’s Big Question: Is Steven Garcia going to get it, or push Stave Spurrier over the edge?
