ATHENS – Austin Long and Mark Richt both had their eyes glued to the TV for the end of the Florida-Ole Miss game.

“We couldn’t believe what was going on,” Long admitted. It was Long’s first trip to Georgia for a football game, but the Dawgs’ rivals were in a fight for their lives. When the final horn went off Florida fell victim to an upset and Long was there to see the expression on Richt’s face.

“I don’t think he could believe it. I know it was hard for me to believe,” Long said.

Georgia was an upset victim Saturday night, too, but Long came away impressed by the Dawgs’ Blackout crowd.

“The atmosphere was impressive,” he said. “I’ve never been to a game before, so it was pretty awe inspiring for me.”

Long committed to the Bulldogs in the spring and is considered one of the top players in this year’s recruiting class. The Memphis native will play offensive tackle for the Bulldogs next year. He said that fact hit him as he walked onto the turf at Sanford Stadium.

“It does sort of become a reality when you get out there,” said Long. “I started thinking about next year a little.”

Long said he would enroll at Georgia next summer, and that he will make his official visit the weekend of the Senior Gala event in early December.

Perhaps the most-sought-after recruit remaining from Memphis is wide receiver Marlon Brown. Long said Brown had a “very good time” and that he felt the trip helped Georgia’s chances with the playmaker.

Aaron Murray seemed to be with him a lot,” Long said. “I know that he was having a lot of fun. I think it helped Georgia’s chances.”

Long admitted the Bulldogs will have to continue to fight in order to get Brown, who seems like a slight lean to in-state Tennessee at this time.

As for Long, the giant offensive lineman said the trip was great for him to meet and get to know better many of the young men he will be playing with over the next few years.

“I got to see a lot of guys – Zach, Aaron, Chase, Abry – really everyone that was there,” he said. “I really enjoyed it.”
