Vance Makes Transition to OT
Vince Vance

TEMPE – After three weeks, Georgia head coach Mark Richt said he thought Vince Vance deserved a chance to play left tackle. The move meant shaking up the entire line – with all five positions different from how the Bulldogs had started the past three games – but Vance provided a suitable reward.

Georgia’s line held Arizona State to just once sack and Vance, who moved from left guard to left tackle, kept the Sun Devils’ All-American defensive tackle Dexter Davis at bay throughout the game.

“It was kind of a team effort, but Davis didn’t dominate the game or control the game, and Vince had a lot to do with it,” Richt said.

Vance’s transition meant Chris Davis moved from center to left guard, while Clint Boling moved from right tackle to right guard, returning the two linemen to where they finished last season. Redshirt freshman Justin Anderson got his first start at right tackle.

“Me and Clint were back to where we ended last year,” Davis said. “I think we were both more confident there.”

Freshman Ben Jones earned his first career start as well, playing the entire game at center and impressing teammates and coaches.

“I wasn’t really worried about that, but I didn’t know how he would handle it,” Davis said of Jones. “He handled it well. You wouldn’t know he was a freshman out there, that’s for sure.”
