The first practice lasted less than 90 minutes, while the scrimmage was just under two hours.
Following the morning session, the Bulldogs continued their decades-old tradition of celebrating the end of two-a-days with watermelon.
"We only had four two-a-days this year, but we finished it with the old watermelon cuttin' from the Doug Coggins family," Richt said with a large melon draped over his shoulder. "We'd like to thank them in front of everybody. Once you get going in camp, it's sort of like 'Groundhog Day' and then the watermelon shows up and they know it's close to the end. I'm actually going to take this to my room and hoard it for myself. I usually take it home, but I think I'm going to keep this one for myself."
The Coggins family drove the truckload of watermelons from their home in Carnesville, Ga., for the 11th consecutive year.
"We had the shortest scrimmage in the history of Georgia Football," head coach Mark Richt joked after the session. "That was mainly because of the number of guys that are banged up. We didn't want to overwork the guys that are healthy."
A number of regulars sported green jerseys and did not see action in the scrimmage. Tailback Knowshon Moreno donned the green jersey but saw limited playing time.
"We worked primarily on a few different simulated situations today," Richt said. "We had a four-minute drill where the offense took over for the last four minutes of a game and we needed a couple of first downs to run out the clock to win the game. We worked on third-and-six, seven, eight, nine and 10. We played overtime as the third overtime, where if a team scores they have to go for two to seal the win. We finished with goal-line."
Richard Samuel was the leading rusher with 51 yards on six attempts. Matthew Stafford connected on 10-of-11 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns, while Logan Gray completed 4-of-5 attempts for 29 yards and Joe Cox completed 5-of-9 for 34 yards with an interception by Akeem Hebron. Leading receivers included Kris Durham with four catches for 30 yards, Israel Troup with two catches for 25 yards and a touchdown, Tripp Chandler with two catches for 32 yards, Richard Samuel with two catches for 23 yards and Dontavious Jackson with two catches for 20 yards.
"Cox got into the third and long situations, which usually doesn't bode well because the defense can pin their ears back and really come after you," Richt said. "That's why his numbers weren't a little bit better."
Defensively, Akeem Dent recorded six tackles, Darryle Gamble and Charles White had five stops apiece and Justin Houston recorded a pair of sacks.
After a morning practice on Saturday, the Bulldogs will take part in their annual Picture Day festivities at Sanford Stadium in the afternoon. The football players and coaches will be on hand for photographs and autographs from 3-5 p.m. Other UGA teams will be available from 1-3 p.m.
