Fields and Beckham Named All-Americans

Posted Jun 12, 2008

ATHENS - University of Georgia senior pitcher Joshua Fields and junior shortstop Gordon Beckham have been named First Team All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, the NCBWA announced Wednesday.

Fields and Beckham were named first team All-Americans earlier this month by Collegiate Baseball and marked the first time that the Bulldogs had two make the first team in the same year. Both Bulldogs were first round draft picks last week, and that was the second time in school history Georgia had a pair of first rounders. Beckham was the eighth overall pick by the Chicago White Sox while Fields went to Seattle at No. 20. Beckham is batting .401 with 26 home runs and 72 RBI. Fields is 2-2 with a 2.76 ERA and an SEC-best 16 saves. In 32.2 innings, he has struck out 59.

The sixth-ranked Bulldogs (41-23-1) are on their way to the College World Series, the sixth appearance in school history including third trip under head coach David Perno. Georgia will face top-ranked Miami (52-9) Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
