ATHENS – Dean Legge’s review of the week in Georgia football recruiting.

NOTE: Don't Miss the Dawg Post Chat this Wednesday at Noon...

Murray picks Georgia over Florida

Folks don’t realize just how big of a deal Arron Murray’s selection of Georgia over Florida is. There are a couple of reasons why: 1. Murray is considered at least the top quarterback in Florida – some thinks he’s the best in the entire state (He was Mr. Football in the Sunshine State). I don’t care who you are you can’t have your major conference rival coming in and getting players over you in your back yard. That’s what happened to Florida with regards to Murray. Georgia came down, wanted Murray and got him – that didn’t happen in the past. I can’t recall the last “big-deal” player Georgia beat Florida out for who is from down there. It was a huge win for Georgia. 2. Murray is going to bring players with him. He may never play a down in his entire career in Athens (that’s something we don’t know, and I am not suggesting that to be the case), but Murray will get players to go along with him. Orson Charles, Murray’s teammate at Plant, is the most likely target, but there are other targets from Florida Murray can pull, too.

I will have more on this subject in the coming days (particularly in Wednesday’s chat) but several things popped up. Bryce Ros is huge – and he plans on getting bigger. He’s at about 250 right now. He told me the Georgia coaches want him to come in at about 270. I may have misheard him – he may have been saying that they want him at 270 this fall. I don’t know how he could really gain 20 pounds (nevertheless 20 good pounds) in about 30 days. Still, the weight gain likely means Ros will be moving away from tight end to the line. Chase Vasser is one impressive physical specimen. He told me Sunday night that he’s consistently running at the 4.4 level in the 40-yard dash. He’s a very big linebacker now, and I think he will hold on at that spot because of his speed. In other words, right now I don’t think he will move to defensive end, but I understand why folks would ask that question. Zach Mettenberger is the most impressive quarterback I have seen from Georgia in some time. He’s a huge prospect, and Vasser swears to me that he’s going to work with Mettenberger’s on his speed this summer. Speedy or not, there is no denying Metteberger’s size and his arm strength. I love his arm. I am very interested to see what his season will be like in Watkinsville this fall.

Other News and Notes

By anyone’s math Georgia has about seven more scholarships to offer for the class of 2009. There are 15 seniors this fall. One scholarship player – Na Derris Ward – is leaving the team. That gives Georgia the ability to sign 16 players… at this time. That number will go up over time if players leave early for the 2009 NFL Draft. No matter what the Dawgs are at least halfway if not more than halfway to their entire 2009 class... Georgia coaches are hitting the road this week for recruiting visits around the South.
