Wrapping Up Spring Season

Georgia wrapped up its spring recruiting season the same day they wrapped up their spring practices. It closed with a bang, too, as highly sought after Abry Jones committed to the Bulldogs over a host of suitors including Clemson.

Interestingly, Jones’ teammate, Eric Fields committed to Clemson a few days later. However, Northside Warner Robbins head coach Conrad Nix told the Macon Telegraph that Fields was not committed. As I understand it Fields is committed to Clemson – at least that’s the way Fields and Clemson see it.

Class of 2008 Makes It

According to Brandon Boykin, all of the 2008 signees were at Georgia’s G-Day except Christian Robinson and Xavier Avery. Robinson told Dawg Post’s Quentin Grant that he was headed on a mission trip to Africa.

“Robinson said the mission trip was through a school sponsored mission group and while in Honduras they poured cement floors for homes and spent time with children in the local community village they were helping. His trip to Africa will consist of making bricks in order for the people there to build homes.”

Class of 2009 there, too

Several of the committed players from the Class of 2009 were there, too. Zach Mettenberger, who is planning on enrolling early, has been somewhat of a fixture at Georgia practices this spring. The tall soon-to-be senior is in the process of installing a new offense at Oconee County. The Warriors made it to the first round of the AAA playoffs last season, but Mettenberger wants to get further in his last high school try.

Newest Offer

Buford’s Dallas Lee was the latest prep star to get an offer from Georgia. Lee said in an interview with Dawg Post’s Dean Legge that he was happy to get the offer from Georgia, and that its coming down to Tennessee and the Dawgs.

“Coach Searels took me to the side and he told me that they were offering,” he said.

Lee said he’s going to try to pick his college choice before the end of spring practice, which is in May.

Wrestling Away a Big One?

Orson Charles, who is the tight end target for big-time quarterback prospect Aaron Murray, said he is considering Georgia, along with a slew of schools. While pulling in Murray or Charles would be considered a real upset, the tight end said that he’s open to playing at a school with such great tight end tradition.

“I want to go to a school that uses its tight ends a lot,” he said. Georgia fits that mold, but so does Charles’ self-described “dream school” Miami.

Signal Caller(s)?

It seemd more and more that Murray would pick Florida, and soon – at least that’s what those it seemed like earlier Sunday, but Murray didn't pick Florida - at least not yet - and it looks like it could take a little bit for him to make that decision. If Murray picks Florida, and Georgia misses on top quarterback Tom Savage, what will that mean for the Dawgs? There is a growing thought that if Savage picks Rutgers or a school other than Georgia that the Bulldogs may just sign one quarterback this year. That was not the thinking coming into the season at all, but it may be headed that way. Georgia seems no closer to being interested in Jordan Luallen than they ever were – now Georgia Tech leads for him. Georgia may be quite interested in 2010 quarterback Phillip Sims, who set a Virginia state playoff record with 470 yards and 26 completions in a 24-21 loss in the state semifinals in December. Speaking of quarterbacks, Myrtle Beach’s Everett Golson (2011) may get national attention this season, but he loves basketball just as much as football – and from all reports may be the most talented athlete in the South under the age of 16.
