Spring Practice Day 14: News and Notes Premium Story

ATHENS - Josh Kendall's news and notes from Georgia's spring practice.

WATCHING THE WEATHER: There is a chance, however small, that the game will not be played. Today’s forecast calls for a 100 percent chance of rain. Rain probably wouldn’t wash out the game, but lightning is a different story.

“We would try to play within reason,” Richt said. “I can’t say exactly how long we’d wait it out. We wouldn’t wait it out two or three hours I don’t think, but we’d wait it out 30 minutes or even an hour.”

If the game is cancelled, it will not be rescheduled, Richt said.

SITTING STARTERS: Defensive coordinator Willie Martinez wants to win today’s game but is more interested in building depth on his unit, he said. That’s why he’ll be keeping several of his starters out of action, or severely limiting their action, today.

“We’ve been doing that for the most part in all the scrimmages, but we’re going to continue to see what some of these young guys can do,” Martinez said. “(Depth) is one of the things that helped us last year. In the ballgames that were tight, we were able to play at a different level than some of our opponents were at.”

Martinez declined to name the starters he plans to rest, but linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Rennie Curran and cornerback Asher Allen are good bets.

GAME FORMAT: Georgia will use normal clock rules, Richt said. The Bulldogs will not kick off and will not rush field goals or punts, he said.

Ticket sales for today’s game have been brisk, and Richt also is trying to motivate his players with the idea that members of the national media may be in attendance.

“There will probably be people here from around the nation who wouldn’t normally be here because of the expectations, so I hope we play with some heart and some spirit,” he said.

Former Bulldogs Frank Ros, Kevin Butler, D.J. Shockley and Greg Blue will serve as honorary coaches.
