ATHENS – There are a couple of things Abry Jones is looking for in a school.

Abry Jones Profile

The most important may be honesty, and he feels like he’s getting that from Georgia right now.

“They tell it to you like it is,” Jones said. “Sometimes that’s not what you want to hear, but I like they are being up front about everything.”

Jones is considered one of the top football players in Georgia. He helps Northside to the AAAA State Championship in the fall, and has been getting recruited by a slew of schools. This visit to Georgia was not his first.

Still, Jones said other schools – Clemson and Miami specifically – were also recruiting him hard.

“Clemson is just like Warner Robbins, and I’ve liked Miami since I was little,” Jones said.

As for the trip to Athens, Jones said it went well.

“After we ate breakfast we got to sit in on their kickoff coverage meeting. We also got to see their punt video,” he said. “We went to position meetings after that. I was in there with Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins. I got a feel of how Coach Garner corrects them through film. After that was a highlight tape of the Sugar Bowl. Coach Martinez was talking about setting a good tempo for the scrimmage.”

Watching Georgia’s first scrimmage of the spring was similar to that of Jones’ high school.

“We went from there to the locker room and weight room. Practice was pretty much like what we do at Northside. It was pretty much first team on first team and second team on second team. We had a good time watching them get after it.”

Jones said Georgia was pushing him to get organized about the next step in his life.

“After we watched the scrimmage we ate lunch I was lucky enough to talk with Coach Richt. He just asked me about my family. He asked me about the dates for coming tests that are coming up. He wanted me to make sure to get the NCAA Clearinghouse stuff going,” he said.

The Bulldogs made clear that Jones is their top prospect at the defensive tackle spot.

“I talked with Coach Garner a little bit after talking with Coach Richt. He just kept reminding me that I was his top guy,” Jones said.

It seems, too, that Jones thinks highly of Georgia.

“I think Georgia has the edge over the other schools right,” he said when comparing Georgia with Miami, Florida and Clemson.
