ATHENS – Georgia is trying very hard to keep the focus off the fall and on the fundamental details of spring practice, which began Monday afternoon.

It’s too much for Chris Davis, though. The sophomore center couldn’t make it past the first day without letting his true feelings show.

“Coaches say take it a game at a time, but I’m trying to win a national championship,” Davis said after the Bulldogs finished a two-hour workout. “I’ve never had a ring. I never won a championship in high school or anything, and it would be a great experience.”

Recently, Davis saw a Georgia tennis player’s biography on the Facebook Web site and saw that team got to meet President Bush after winning its national crown.

“I thought that would be pretty cool, to meet the president,” he said. “That’s my goal, to meet the president.”

If Georgia wins the national title, Davis will be meeting a new president. Which would he prefer?

“I’m a Republican,” he said. “Let’s say it that way.”

Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt knows his players are excited about the possibilities of the 2008 season but hopes they don’t get quite as far out front as Davis has.

“They look around, and they see that we have a chance to be pretty good if everybody does what they’re supposed to do,” Richt said. “I’m excited about that, but you really have to earn the right just to be good. We’ve got a lot of work to do just to be a good team. All that other stuff is just too much to digest.”

It’s too early to tell much after one practice, Richt said.

“It was like a lot of first practices,” he said. “It was hard to see who really did what.”

Georgia will work out three more times this week before taking off a week for spring break.
