ATHENS – The way college football determines its champion may change starting today.

University of Georgia president Michael Adams will hold a press conference this afternoon to call for a playoff in Division I football. The news was first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

According to the article, Adams, who is the chairman of the NCAA’s executive committee, will suggest a single-elimination tournament run by the NCAA with the Fiesta, Orange, Sugar and Rose bowls serving as the quarterfinal destinations.

Adams called the chances for success “50-50” and said the current system, which shut Georgia out of the national title game this season, “is not working.”

Adams’ move supporting a playoff is a change for him. In June of 2006 he still supported the bowl system..
