ATLANTA – Georgia freshman Knowshon Moreno looks just fine at tailback, but he may have a future on defense in case it doesn’t work out, senior Thomas Brown said.

“He might be maybe a safety or something next year,” Brown said.

With 9:19 left in the third quarter, Moreno what probably was the play of the game in his team’s 31-17 win over Georgia Tech. Moreno let a lateral pass from quarterback Matthew Stafford slip through his hands, resulting in a fumble that was recovered by the Yellow Jackets’ Morgan Burnett at Georgia’s 26-yard line. Burnett returned the ball 23 yards and was on the verge of scoring a touchdown that would have put Georgia Tech ahead 12-16 when Moreno chased him down from behind and stripped the ball. The ball bounced off Burnett’s leg and out of the back of the end zone, giving the Bulldogs the ball back.

“It’s not that surprising because Knowshon hustles so hard,” Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. “He’s a guy who’s not going to quit.”

Moreno had averaged 153.2 yards in the last five games but had to cede the offensive stage to Brown, who had 139 rushing yards to his 45.

“Knowshon battled just as hard,” Richt said. “It’s just sometimes the creases come for one guy more than the other.”

Moreno was not made available for comment after the game.
