SEC: No Sanctions for Celebration

ATHENS – After a conversation with SEC commissioner Mike Slive on Monday, Georgia head coach Mark Richt sent a written apology to the conference office for condoning his team’s celebration against Florida on Saturday.

“I do want to apologize in writing for what transpired after the first score of the Georgia/Florida game this past Saturday when our entire team left the bench area to celebrate the score,” Richt wrote.

In an attempt to fire up his team, Richt told the Bulldogs that he expected them to be flagged for excessive celebration after their first touchdown, which came with 6:00 left in the first quarter. He did not expect what happened, he said, which was more than 60 players celebrating on the field.

“I admit this was inappropriate. … I understand that the entire team running on the field created the potential for an altercation and that excessive celebration is not in compliance with the Southeastern Conference sportsmanship policies and expected standards,” Richt wrote to the commissioner. “I apologize that I put everyone in that situation and specifically apologize to you, the Southeastern Conference, and the University of Florida. You can be assured I will not ask our team to do this type of thing again.”

The letter was copied to Georgia athletics director Damon Evans and school president Michael Adams. Evans took no issue with Richt’s decision, he said Saturday.

“I believe in coach Richt and right now he’s got us in position to win the game,” Evans said moments before a fumbled snap sealed Georgia’s 42-30 victory.

The conference did not announce any penalties against Georgia, and SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom did not return a call from Josh Kendall seeking comment on the incident.

SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom said Slive received the letter and accepted Richt’s apology. There will be no sanctions against Georgia, Bloom said.
