Florida Week: Tuesday Practice Report

ATHENS - The Georgia Bulldogs practiced for just over two hours in shoulder pads and shorts on Tuesday afternoon Athens, their traditional Wednesday game-week session. With last Saturday's open date, the Dogs have moved their preparations up a day.

"This was the last day that we're going to do anything competitive," head coach Mark Richt said. "Everything is scout work from here on in. I believe we got done the things we needed get done. We're finalizing our plan as to what to keep and what to chunk. We're on track pretty good right now."

Earlier in the day Richt held his weekly press conference at Stegeman Coliseum where he discussed Saturday's match-up at length. He also announced that center Fernando Velasco, defensive tackle Jeff Owens, safety Kelin Johnson and tailback Knowshon Moreno would serve as captains against Florida.

"I was told that Knowshon last week (at Vanderbilt) was the first freshman I had ever made a captain," Richt said. "In the beginning I would lean more heavily towards the seniors, but as time has gone on there have been some underclassmen that deserve that honor. We have done more juniors and sophomores, but I guess we never had a freshman until we selected Knowshon. He certainly has practiced and played like a champion, and that in itself is enough for me to make him a captain."

Richt said his team is excited about the challenge of facing the Gators.

"We are playing the defending national champions this week and a team that could easily be ranked No. 1 in the country," Richt said. "They have two very close losses to two outstanding teams, and they are only a fraction away from being where they were a year ago. They have a lot of talented athletes who are maximizing their abilities, and they are very well-coached. They are an outstanding football team and everyone knows it. I have them ranked a little higher than everyone else. I think they are that good. It's going to be a whale of ballgame."
