NASHVILLE – Kregg Lumpkin’s return to the tailback rotation didn’t last a quarter, and the rest of his season may be on the line.

Lumpkin injured his left knee and ankle after his second and final carry of the game, and he will have an MRI today to determine if there is any nerve damage in his knee, running backs coach Tony Ball said.

Lumpkin, who was clearly discouraged sitting on the sideline after the game, finished two carries for 5 yards and one catch for 7 yards. Lumpkin broke his thumb in the first game of the season and didn’t carry the ball again until last week.

With Lumpkin out and Thomas Brown already sidelined with a broken collarbone, Georgia was left with only Knowshon Moreno. That proved to be plenty as Moreno gained 157 yards on 28 carries.

Brown could return in time for Georgia’s next game, which is Oct. 27 against Florida, head coach Mark Richt said Saturday night. If Brown and Lumpkin aren’t available, former walk-on Jason Johnson and freshman fullback Shaun Chapas will compete for the No. 2 tailback spot.
