NASHVILLE – In case you wondering, yes, Earl Bennett’s teammates make fun of his Web site – www.mynameisearlbennett.com.

“They say funny things, about the Web site or whatever,” said Bennett, Vanderbilt’s junior wide receiver. “It’s pretty cool, though.”

Vanderbilt’s opponents don’t have nearly as jovial a reaction to Bennett. Georgia (4-2, 2-2 SEC) takes on the Commodores (3-2, 1-2) at 6 p.m. today in Vanderbilt Stadium, and stopping Bennett will be job No. 1 for the No. 24 Bulldogs. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

“You better know where he’s at, and you better have a plan for him,” head coach Mark Richt said.

Bennett, who Vanderbilt recruited out of Birmingham, Ala., leads the SEC in both catches (41) and receiving yards per game (99.8), and he is in the midst of a record-breaking season.

With three catches today, which would be a bad day for Bennett, he will pass former Georgia receiver Terrence Edwards and move into second place in the conference in catches. With seven catches, he would pass former Kentucky receiver Craig Yeast and become SEC’s career leader.

“I think it’s a pretty monumental achievement in two and a half years,” Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson said.

Bennett, 6-foot-1, 202 pounds, has 202 catches and 2,521 yards in his career. He needs 572 more receiving yards to pass Edwards and become the SEC’s all-time leader in yardage.

“He’s walking down (the records) in his junior year,” Richt said. “I don’t know if he’ll come back for his senior year. It wouldn’t bother me if he turned pro, but he’s going to shatter the records if he comes back next year.”

Bennett has three 200-plus yard games, more than any player in SEC history, and has surpassed 100 yard nine times.

“When you study that guy, he is a really talented guy,” Richt said. “He’s tough, and he’s fast, and he’s oozing with confidence.”

Bennett, who was held to a season-low four catches and 31 yards last week by Auburn, has paid little attention to the records he is on the verge of breaking, he said.

“I don’t really think about it too much,” he said. “I just go out and play hard.”
