Lumpkin looks to get in vs. Vols

ATHENS – It may not be Saturday, but the day is coming when senior running back Kregg Lumpkin will be back in the running back rotation.

Like it or not.

"When the time comes, I don't think there's any doubt he's going to get in it one way or another," Coach Mark Richt said. "I'm sure it'll be watched real closely and critiqued if we have less production, but he's going to play."

Lumpkin, the No. 12 Bulldogs' leading rusher last year, had carried the ball three times for 5 yards before breaking his thumb in the third game of the year. He has played the last two games on special teams with a large cast on his right hand, and he will try to play this week against Tennessee with a much smaller cast.

The smaller cast might allow him to carry the ball, but Richt has indicated Georgia is going to be cautious, which it can be because the duo of Thomas Brown and Knowshon Moreno is playing so well.

"I'm just going to go out there and try to get back into my rhythm," Lumpkin said.

Lumpkin could carry the ball, but Richt doesn't know where he stands on the depth chart, Richt said Thursday.

"I think all it's going to take is for him to break a big run for people to say, ‘Hey, good idea coach,'" Richt said. Recommended Stories
