Georgia’s redshirt freshman tailback was named the league’s freshman of the week after gaining 74 yards on 17 carries in a 26-23 win over Alabama. Although he’s still backing up starter Thomas Brown, Moreno leads the Bulldogs with 342 yards.
His 85.5-yard per game average is ninth in the league and second best among SEC freshmen.
Orgeron, who brings his Rebels to Sanford Stadium on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game, said Moreno was the player who most caught his eye while watching film of the No. 15 Bulldogs.
“I’m telling you this Knowshon Moreno is a hard running powerful back,” he said. “This guy will make you miss now. He’ll be one of the best backs we see this year.”
There still is plenty of room for Moreno to improve, Georgia coach Mark Richt said.
“He’s definitely been exciting to this point, but he still has a ways to go to learn how to finish runs a little bit better,” Richt said.
Richt was particularly disappointed by a 19-yard run Moreno made in the third quarter when he knocked over an Alabama defender but then stepped out of bounds on his own despite being 1-yard shy of a first down.
“If he had just cut inside or driven his feet right there, he would have gotten a first down,” Richt said.
