COATES IN ACTION: Antavious Coates, a South Carolina native whose Georgia career ended lastmonth after his fourth ACL tear, will be an honorary captain for Saturday’s game against the Gamecocks.
Coates, a redshirt sophomore who never got to play for the Bulldogs, will dress out in full pads and walk to midfield for the pregame coin toss.
“He never got to play, never really got to put his pads on and run out there before the game with the crowd noise and all of that,” Richt said. “We just want to honor him on Saturday.”
Marcus Howard (defense) and Brandon Miller (defense), offensive lineman Fernando Velasco (offense) and tailback Thomas Brown (special teams) will be the other captains.
SURGERY FOR LUMPKIN: Senior tailback Kregg Lumpkin had surgery on his broken thumb Tuesday morning and watched his Georgia teammates practice Tuesday afternoon. Lumpkin could return in two weeks for special teams duty but won’t be ready to carry the ball again for three or four weeks, Richt said.
UPDATING THE RECORDS: Middle linebacker Dannell Ellerbe was credited with seven tackles after the Oklahoma State game, but Georgia’s coaches credited him with 11 after watching film from the game.
“Your (middle) linebacker should be your highest tackler,” Richt said.
Ellerbe needs to continue to work on his hitting, Richt said.
“You want your (middle) linebacker to be a devastating tackler, an intimidator,” Richt said. “Dannell has to continue to improve to be able to run through people.”
PAY-PER-VIEW: Georgia’s Sept. 15 game against Western Carolina will be available live via pay-per-view by CSS. The game, which kicks off at 1 p.m., will cost $29.99.
