Oklahoma State Week: Thursday Practice Report

Posted Aug 30, 2007

ATHENS - The Georgia football team worked on their final preparations for Oklahoma State for an hour and a half in a steady rain in shorts and jerseys on Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs square off with the Cowboys at Sanford Stadium at 6:45 p.m. EDT on Saturday. During their final full walk-through, head coach Mark Richt said how comfortable he and the coaching staff feels with having a solid starter at quarterback with sophomore Matthew Stafford, rather than last year's ongoing competition at the position.

"I feel better at this point this season than I did last year at this point. The quarterback thing is so big and it really affects everything," said Richt. "This year, we know who our starter is and we know we have a great back-up to him."

Richt mentioned that he is also pleased with Georgia's options on kickoff return.

"Thomas (Brown) breaks tackles on kickoffs because he is so strong, Asher (Allen) changes direction more than any of them, which can be a good or bad thing sometimes, and Knowshon (Moreno) is somewhere between the two with speed, ability to change direction and his power," Richt said. "But the difference is that Knowshon will probably get hit harder than he ever has in his life on Saturday since he has not played in a college game."

In addition to his belief that freshmen Trinton Sturdivant (offensive line)and Bruce Figgins (tight end), among others, will play this season, Richt also said that he thinks freshman defensiveback Vance Cuff "will play before the season is over."
