08/21/2007 Georgia Practice Reports

ATHENS - The Georgia football team moved closer to its 2007 season opener with a two-hour workout at the Woodruff Practice Fields on Tuesday.

³It¹s the time of year where everybody is really tired of slamming into each other, tired of the heat and just tired of the wait,² Georgia coach Mark Richt said. ³But we¹ve got to keep getting better. I thought the guys really persevered today.²

Richt said Tuesday¹s practice ended with the No. 1 offense going against the No. 2 defense and the No. 2 offense going against the No. 1 defense. In each of the one-minute drills, Richt said the defense stopped the offense with an interception on the last play.

³We got in some good speed work,² Richt said. ³The offenses did some nice things, but the defense made some outstanding plays to win the drills. When you¹re in the one-minute drill, you¹re either winning or losing the game. Today, the defense won.²

Richt was asked about the Bulldogs¹ situation at fullback, where Brannan Southerland is the starter and Shaun Chapas and Fred Munzenmaier are the backups.

³Brannan is an outstanding football player,² Richt said. ³He scored a lot of touchdowns last year, he¹s an excellent blocker, he runs well in short-yardage situations and he catches the ball extremely well. Brannan has the ability to make plays. Shaun and Fred can help us on special teams andthey ready to play. They are both versatile backs who are big, strong and physical. Our fullback situation is outstanding for years to come.²
