Pro-Filing the Dawgs

The 2006 NFL season has been a good year for many former Georgia Bulldogs. By looking up and down the final stat leaders you will find many players who wore the red and black. Here is a little help just in case you haven't been following too close.

Defense is the area where a lot of Georgia players have been excelling in as of late. Over the last few seasons, Georgia players have filled the Pro Bowl rosters.

Here is what some of them have done in the 2006 season.

Champ Bailey has been a force all season. In fact his 10 interceptions this season was tied for the most in the NFL. Many of those came in key situations and prevented opponents from scoring. Champ also had a career-high 86 tackles.

Champ wasn't the only one picking off quarterback passes. Sean Jones was 10th in the NFL with 5 interceptions. Sean also tallied 111 tackles.

If interceptions is not your thing maybe sacks are.

Robert Geathers finished with 10 1/2 sacks this season. Good for 14th in the NFL and we all saw what he did to Trent Green.

Charles Grant also applied the pressure. Charles had 6 on the season and now has 36 during his 5-year career.

Leading his way into the top 20 in tackles was Will Witherspoon. Will finished with 113 in his first season with the Rams.

Also with 100 tackles was Jermaine Phillips who finished the year with 104 tackles.

Other former Dawgs starred as well.

Randall Godfrey: 57 tackles, 4 sacks
Richard Seymour:40 tackles, 4 sacks
Phillip Daniels: 37 tackles, 3 sacks
Thomas Davis: 88 tackles
Boss Bailey: 67 tackles
Kendrell Bell: 49 tackles

Some other rookies contributed as well...

Kedric Golston: 44 tackles
Greg Blue: 14 tackles

Switching to offense...

Hines Ward had another solid season. Despite missing 2 games, Hines finished 20th in the NFL with 74 receptions and finished 21st with 975 receiving yards.

Reggie Brown wasn't too far off. In the first season in the post-T.O. era, Reggie had 46 receptions and 816 receiving yards. He also led the Eagles with 8 TD receptions.

But lately Georgia has been known for the NFL tight ends and overall they did not disappoint.

Randy McMichael: 62 receptions, 640 yards, 3 TD
Ben Watson: 49 receptions, 643 yards, 3 TD
Jermaine Wiggins: 46 receptions, 386 yards, TD
Leonard Pope: 16 receptions, 161 yards

The running game for NFL Bulldogs was not as good as some of the past years, but many of them found valuable roles.

Musa Smith: 36 rushes, 153 yards, 22 receptions, 135 yards (all 4 career-highs)
Verron Haynes: 15 rushes, 78 yards, 18 receptions, 95 yards

And Mr. Pro Bowl... Mack Strong. Another solid season for the Seahawks.

33 rushes, 149 yards, 29 receptions, 159 yards

-----------------------------------------

I am sorry I can not calculate "pancake blocks". So for all the offensive linemen out there I am sorry.

-----------------------------------------

In case you haven't noticed, John Kasay is still kicking. The Athens native finished with 100 points and was 24-for-27 in field goals. He even punted once, but that only went for 25 yards.

-----------------------------------------

The easiest stat for me to count up was passing. Even though Georgia has two quarterbacks in the NFL it was no problem for me.

David Greene and D.J. Shockley had 0 pass attempts combined.
