Some Things You Might Not Know (bowl style)

On Friday, Texas Tech trailed by 31 points and then defeated Minnesota 44-41. Now the 25-point Georgia comeback over Purdue in the 2000 Outback Bowl is the 3rd largest comeback in bowl history. The 2nd was the 2001 GMAC Bowl when Marshall came back from 30 to defeat East Carolina. You never know what you will see in a bowl game and here are some more things that you might not know. Bowl Style!
Most people know that "The Granddaddy of them all" is the Rose Bowl. But did you know that the first Rose Bowl game was played in 1902.
Michigan
defeated
Stanford
49-0 in that game and when led by Neil Snow's 5 touchdown runs.
Another crazy Rose Bowl fact was the 1942 Rose Bowl game was played in Durham,
North Carolina
. The game was moved for security reasons due to the attacks of Pearl Harbor just weeks before the game. The game was won by
Oregon State
20-16 over the hometown
Duke
Blue Devils.
More of you know what happened in the following Rose Bowl.
Georgia
defeated
UCLA
9-0 in front of 90,000 fans back in Pasadena.
The first Chick-Fil-A Bowl or Peach Bowl was played in 1968 when
LSU
defeated
Florida State
in a game played at Grant Field. Chick-Fil-A didn't invent the bowl games, but they did invent the chicken sandwich.
-----------------------------------------
Bobby Bowden was not the head coach of FSU back then, but Coach Bowden is 2nd all-time in most coaching wins to Joe Paterno. Entering Saturday, Joe-Pa has 21 wins. Bowden now has 20. Bear Bryant is 3rd on the list with 15.
Vince Dooley
only had 8.
In fact, Coach Dooley was just 8-10-2 in bowl games. He is not the only well-known coach with a losing bowl record.
Others include... Tom Osborne, Lavell Edwards, Hayden Fry, Shug Jordan, and
Virginia Tech
's
Frank Beamer
.
I know many of us make fun of
Lou Holtz
, but he is still the only head coach to lead 5 different teams to a bowl game. He has led William and Mary,
North Carolina State
,
Arkansas
,
Notre Dame
and
South Carolina
to bowl games.
But here is something Coach Holtz never did. There are 2 coaches to lead a team to a bowl game and a basketball team to the NCAA Tourament. Those two men are Nibs Price and Dick Romney. But that happened over 50 years ago. About the time Coach Holtz was starting out.
-----------------------------------------
The team with the most bowl wins is
Alabama
. They have 30. Southern Cal is next with 28. The Bulldogs are tied for 6th with 22.
Georgia Tech
and
Nebraska
also have 22.
Alabama have also played the most bowl games. They have played in 54.
Tennessee
and
Texas
will both be played in the 46th.
The SEC team with the best bowl winning pct is
Ole Miss
. The Rebels are 19-12 in bowl games.
What about the Gators?
Florida
has a losing record in bowl games, they are just 15-18 in bowl games.
Other teams with losing bowl records that may be shocking are... Arkansas,
BYU
,
Colorado
and
West Virginia
.
-----------------------------------------
Alabama also holds the record for biggest blowout in a bowl game. In the 1953 Orange Bowl, the Tide defeated
Syracuse
61-6. They were led by Harold "Red" Drew back then, not Bear Bryant. Maybe Coach Drew could comeback and be Alabama's next head coach.
The most points in a bowl game belongs to Nebraska. They scored 66 in the 2000 Alamo Bowl vs
Northwestern
.
P. J. Daniels
of Yellow Jacket fame still holds the record for most rush yards in a bowl game with 307 in the 2004 Humanitarian Bowl.
Most pass yards in a bowl game is 576.
Byron Leftwich
and
Ty Detmer
share that record.
Current Bulldog Offensive Coordinator
Mike Bobo
only threw for 267 yards in the 1998 Outback Bowl. But he did throw 19 straight completions which still is a bowl record.
Maybe Mike Bobo and his offenses can help lead the Dawgs to set more bowl records as a team and individually. Maybe, that is something that I don't even know.
