Dawgs want win for 2007 rankings

ATLANTA – All Georgia's focus leading up to this week's Chick-fil-A Bowl has been about how the game will affect the Bulldogs' postseason rankings.

There is something else to consider, though. Mark Richt and Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, both of whom vote in the coaches' poll, acknowledged Wednesday that bowl game outcomes play a role in next season's preseason rankings.

"I think it affects it quite a bit," Beamer said.

The Bulldogs and Hokies in particular could get a big boost from a bowl win because they each have a strong nucleus of players returning from this season's teams, he said.

While Beamer said he factors bowl wins into his preseason poll the next season, Richt said he simply takes a consensus of every preseason ranking he can find to rank teams before the season starts.

Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan predicted a win in Saturday night's 8 p.m. game in the Georgia come could boost Georgia into position to be ranked in the Top 15 next season. Virginia Tech would put itself in position to be preseason Top 10 with a victory, Stokan said.
