Chick-fil-A Bowl: Dec. 18 Practice Report

Posted Dec 18, 2006

ATHENS - The Georgia Bulldogs (8-4) practiced for two hours in full pads on Monday morning in preparation for its matchup with No. 14 Virginia Tech (10-2) in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Georgia had originally planned to practice twice on Monday; however, head coach Mark Richt opted to work out in full pads during the morning and utilize the afternoon for off-field conditioning.

"We had a good day today," Richt said. "We went ahead and changed our plans again on our practice a little bit. I felt like we had real good practices before we left for the weekend, and I did want to double-day every day. Even though we did split it up, I still thought going through the motions of padding it up twice a day wasn't going to hurt so much physically, but I wanted to keep them fresh mentally. We added just a tad more in the morning and cancelled this afternoon in lieu of a good lift and walkthrough.

"Today was probably the only day we'll go full pads before the Christmas break," Richt continued. "I was going to do it twice but decided to just do it today. We got some good, live tackling with inside drill, first and 10 situation and a short yardage situation. We got a chance for everyone to tackle."

Richt said that the Bulldogs will practice twice on Tuesday, and he is leaning toward practicing just once on Wednesday.

"We'll see how they practice tomorrow," Richt said. "That might help me decide."

Richt said he no definite timetable for hiring the position on his staff which became available when offensive coordinator Neil Callaway was named the head coach at UAB on Sunday.

"When we're ready and we know we're doing the best thing and the right thing," Richt said. "My goal would certainly be to have a decision made prior to the bowl game if I can. I'm not looking to have this thing to drag out a long time, but I don't to do it at breakneck speed where I don't have peace about it. I'm going to think it through and pray it through and when I get some peace about it that's when I'll make a decision."
