ATHENS – Georgia offensive coordinator and Macon native Neil Callaway interviewed for the head coaching job at the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Wednesday, head coach Mark Richt said Thursday.

Callaway, a graduate of the University of Alabama, is one of “a few folks” interviewing for the job, Richt said. Callaway’s talk with the school came just weeks after Richt handed play-calling responsibilities to quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo.

UAB is looking to replace Watson Brown, who resigned last week.

Callaway, 51, declined comment on the situation. His track record of success as a player and assistant coach at both Alabama and Auburn should serve him well in the hiring process, Richt said.

“I think the first thing I’d say is as a player or coach, he’s got 11 Southeastern Conference championships,” Richt said. “Everywhere he’s been, especially as a coach, teams have won.”

Callaway is at least the second Bulldog assistant to interview for another job this month. Defensive coordinator Willie Martinez interviewed for the top position at Florida International but quickly removed his name from consideration.

“I don’t get used to it,” Richt said of his assistants regularly getting attention from other schools. “I don’t particularly like it, but on the other hand, if it’s an opportunity that coach is excited about, you don’t ever want to stand in the way of that.”

No other coaches on the staff have talked to other schools or have any plans to change their roles, Richt said.
