Dawgs targeting Wiggins

ATHENS – The remainder of Georgia’s recruiting class may all be players from the Peach State. There is one exception, however.

Doug Wiggins, from North Miami Beach, is one of the last remaining targets on Georgia’s recruiting wish list for 2007, and Willie Martinez is hot on his trail. The former Hurricane player has a lot of ties in the South Florida area, and those ties seem to be working in the Dawgs’ favor as it relates to Wiggins.

“I talk or hear from Coach Martinez almost every day,” Wiggins said. The senior indicated, however, that he hears from his final list of schools “on a daily basis” as well.

Georgia must beat out recently-visited Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina and hometown Miami. Two of the schools on Wiggins’ list are replacing head coaches in the off-season, and Wiggins said he was not certain when he was going to officially visit Miami.

“We haven’t set that visit up yet,” he said.

The biggest news from Wiggins is that he will make his decision at his high school banquet, which is coming up soon.

“I will announce my choice on December 22 at our football banquet,” he said.

Wiggins says that he does not have a leader right now. When asked about why he places Georgia in his final five, he responded: “I really like Athens. I really like the people in Athens. They are football-loving people, and that really stood out to me.

Wiggins is considered a four-star prospect by Scout.com. The Bulldogs would likely use Wiggins in the secondary, but he plays quarterback for his team, too. Martinez’s involvement in Wiggins’ recruitment should give Georgia fans good hope of signing him. After all, Martinez pulled Max Jean-Gilles from North Miami Beach High less than six weeks after the hometown Hurricanes won the national title in 2001.
