ATHENS – Scout.com released the first edition of its 2007 national recruiting rankings today, and Georgia is in striking distance of first place.

The Bulldogs are ranked third in the current edition of the rankings behind only Florida and Texas. Currently the Bulldogs have 23 commitments, but could sign as many as six more players.

However, the Dawgs will have to make up serious ground on Texas and the Gators in order to capture the number one spot. The Longhorns have the top point total at 4,277 and the Gators are in second with 3,222. Georgia is sitting in third with 3,056 points, which is nearly 500 points ahead of rival Georgia Tech’s 2,597 total.

Georgia’s bowl opposition in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, Virginia Tech, is ranked fifth with 2,544 points.

Other SEC schools ranked in the top 25 include: Auburn (8th), Tennessee (10th), Ole Miss (12th), LSU (19th) and Mississippi State (22nd).
