Southerland nearing impressive TD mark

ATHENS – Barring a heck of a finish by tailback Kregg Lumpkin, sophomore Brannan Southerland will become the first fullback to lead Georgia in scoring in almost 50 years.

"It's not something that you expect," said Southerland, who has seven rushing and two receiving touchdowns this year. "I figured I might get a couple touchdowns this year, but more opportunities have come up than last year. I'm not going to shy away from it."

Theron Sapp, one of four Bulldog players to have his jersey retired, was the last fullback to lead the team in points. He did it in 1957, the same year he scored the only touchdown in a 7-0 win that broke an eight-game losing streak to Georgia Tech.

Since Herschel Walker left campus in 1982, a place-kicker has led the Bulldogs in scoring 15 of 23 years. The last non-kicker to take the points title was tailback Olandis Gary in 1998.

However, the Bulldogs have had to use three kickers this season due to injury and inconsistency, and none of the three has a chance to catch Southerland and his 54 points. Southerland's nine touchdowns are the most by any Georgia player since Terrence Edwards scored 10 in 2002.

"It's nice to get in the mix of things, to show people that you can do a little more than blocking," Southerland said, "that you can also do some things with the ball in your hand."

Southerland has 115 yards on 40 carries and has averaged a touchdown every 5.8 times he touches the ball. Lumpkin is second on the team among healthy players with 36 points.
