EASY TO READ?: Richt wondered aloud this week if the Bulldogs’ defense has become too predictable.

“I think certain downs and distances we’ve had a pretty high tendency to play certain coverages,” he said, “which has probably helped people plan and hit some underneath stuff.” Defensive coordinator Willie Martinez said he and his staff scout themselves for tendencies every week and don’t believe there is, or was, a problem.

“We know we do certain things at certain times, but that’s like a lot of people,” he said. “You’re going to do certain things in the red zone, certain things in (different areas of the field). That’s why you prepare, but you try not to be predictable.”

Richt also defended his defense, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation in points allowed just three weeks ago and has since fallen to No. 26 (16.6 points per game).

“I think when we were winning, and we had two shouts in a row, I didn’t hear many complaints about how we were playing defense,” he said, “and we really haven’t changed a whole lot from then to now.”

BACK LINE BLUES: Freshman Asher Allen has been limited in practice this week due to a hip bruise, and that has put the starting kickoff job up for grabs.

“I’m not going to make a decision until Friday,” said assistant coach Tony Ball, who coordinates the unit.

Cornerbacks Ramarcus Brown and Bryan Evans and running back Danny Ware are the options other than Allen, Ball said.

THIS AND THAT: Richt expects tight end Martrez Milner (toe) to play Saturday, but Milner said he was very limited during Wednesday’s practice. “It’s probably going to be a game time decision,” Milner said. … Michael Turner will stay at guard this week if Chester Adams is not 100 percent healthy, Richt said. … Defensive end Quentin Moses has been named one of 15 national semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award.
