Florida Week: Monday Practice Report

Posted Oct 23, 2006

ATHENS The Georgia football team began preparations for Saturday's border war by practicing in chilly conditions for 90 minutes at the Woodruff Practice Fields on Monday.

Georgia (6-2 overall, 3-2 SEC) will face No. 9 Florida (6-1, 4-1) on Saturday at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville. Georgia is coming off a 27-24 win against Mississippi State. Florida, which was idle last week, has SEC wins against Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and LSU, and its only conference loss came to Auburn in its last outing.

"We have a tremendous amount of respect for Florida," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "They have won some big games this year and they have made a lot of plays. We need a great week of practice to prepare for this game. We got off to a good start today."

Richt announced the captains for Saturday's game will be Nick Jones and Daniel Inman on offense, Quentin Moses on defense, and Tony Taylor on special teams.

On Monday, quarterback Matthew Stafford was named the SEC Freshman of the Week. Stafford completed 20-of-32 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns in Georgia's 27-24 win against Mississippi State. He set career highs in attempts, completions, yards and touchdown passes. He completed passes to nine different Bulldog receivers. For the season, Stafford is 67-for-125 for 849 yards and three touchdowns. Stafford is the second Bulldog signal-caller to earn this league honor this season. Last month, Joe Cox was recognized for his performance in the comeback win against Colorado.
