LUMPKIN BENCHED?: Kregg Lumpkin ran impressively but blocked terribly against Tennessee and his starting job is on the line because of it, Richt said.

Lumpkin, who rushed for 78 yards on 13 carries, missed blocks on several key plays, including the blocked punt the Volunteers recovered for a touchdown.

“He reverted back to freshmen days,” Richt said. “That was disappointing. He did run the ball well, but our guys have to know they’re not running specialists.”

Running backs coach Tony Ball has had concerns about Lumpkin’s blocking since Ball was hired in the offseason, he said.

“Fundamentally, he doesn’t block as well as he should,” Ball said. “It’s a shame that he was as fundamentally unsound as he was this weekend, and on a couple of occasions hurt us.”

Thomas Brown, who had 57 yards on eight carries against the Volunteers, had “a great game running the ball,” Richt said.

Defensive tackles Ray Gant and Kade Weston also are competing for a starting job, defensive line coach Rodney Garner said.

WOMEN’S HOOPS SUSPENSION: Georgia women’s basketball coach Andy Landers has suspended All-SEC forward Tasha Humphrey for six games to start the season.

Humphrey, who averaged 20.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game last year, was arrested last month on charges of misdemeanor underage possession of alcohol. Athletic Association policy calls for athletes arrested on alcohol charges to be suspended 10 percent of their athletic season, which is three games for women’s basketball.

“I’ve added another three games to make sure she understands, and everybody else on our basketball team understands, that it’s just flat out not acceptable,” Landers said. “We’re talking about a situation that has never occurred in the 28 years I’ve been here, one that disappointed me, and I’m sure a lot of other people, greatly.”

Humphrey, who also is recovering from offseason knee surgery, will miss games against Rutgers and Stanford during her suspension and will return for the Dec. 3 Georgia Tech game.

THIS AND THAT: Georgia missed a season-high 13 tackles that gave up 88 yards against Tennessee, defensive coordinator Willie Martinez said. … The Oct. 21 Georgia-Mississippi State won’t be televised and will kick off at 1 p.m. … Tereshinski has a bruised shoulder on his non-throwing side but is not bothered much by the injury. … Backup tight end Tripp Chandler was in a green jersey Tuesday because team doctors feared he might have a concussion, but Chandler said he is fine and will be wearing a full-contact jersey at today’s practice.
