Now a Tailback Controversy?

ATHENS – Georgia coach Mark Richt has escaped a quarterback controversy thus far in the season.

What Richt has now is a tailback controversy. For the second time in three weeks, starter Thomas Brown was outshone by his backups. In Saturday’s 34-0 victory over UAB, second-teamer Kregg Lumpkin led the Bulldogs with 54 yards on 10 carries.

Third-teamer Danny Ware had 48 yards on eight carries and continues to lead the team with 6.9 yards per carry this year.

“I’m just blessed and thanking that o-line for the holes they’re opening up for me,” Ware said. “They’re making huge holes for me. Anybody could run though the holes they’re making for me. I just tell them to keep it going. If they give me something, I’ll make something out of it.”

Brown, who had 26 yards on 10 carries against the Blazers, is averaging just 3.4 yards per carry this season. On Saturday, he was once again the victim of poor blocking on occasion. Twice in the first half, he was hit by two Blazer defensive linemen the moment he took the ball.

“I’m not getting frustrated because the main purpose is to win games,” he said. “Statistically, it’s not really a big year for me, but I think I’m playing well and we’re getting better and better every week.”

Coach Mark Richt defended his top tailback.

“In some ways, it’s tougher to be the first guy because you’re playing a defense that’s got a lot of energy and a lot of hope,” he said. “But I don’t want to take away from the vision or tackle-breaking of Kregg and Danny.”

Ware isn’t concerned about his spot on the depth chart yet, he said.

“I’m just go out there and stay on my A-game and bring something to the table every time I get in the game,” he said.
