USC Week: Tuesday Practice Report

ATHENS - The weather was the story of the day during the Georgia Bulldogs' full-pads practice on Tuesday afternoon. Cooler temperatures in the mid-70s replaced the high-80s of late and the last 30 minutes of the Dogs' two and a half hour session included an intermittent rain.

The Bulldogs (1-0, 0-0 SEC) are preparing to face South Carolina (1-0, 1-0) in their league opener this Saturday at 7:45 p.m. ET in Columbia, S.C.

"It was a good day," head coach Mark Richt said. "The conditions were probably similar to what it will be on Saturday. It will probably be warm at the beginning of the game but then cool off as the night goes on. It was good to get a little work in the rain and see who handled the wet ball well."

Richt also announced the captains for the contest. Defensive end Quentin Moses and linebacker Tony Taylor will serve as captains of the defense, and center Nick Jones will be the offensive captain. All three of those players also served as captains for the season opener against Western Kentucky. Walk-on fullback Stephen White, a senior from Bronwood, Ga., who played high school football at Terrell Academy, will be the special teams captain.

Richt held his weekly press conference earlier on Tuesday afternoon where he discussed the matchup with the Gamecocks at length.

³This is our first (SEC) game, first away game and it will be very loud and we don't know how we will handle it," Richt said. "We know that the history of this series is full of close games and we will have to be prepared going into it. Our players know this game is crucial. The last four years we've won the game, we've had successful seasons, gone to some major bowls and won a couple SEC Championships. I would like to think the losing team would have a great season after a loss, but history hasn't proven so."
