USC Week: Monday Practice Report

Posted Sep 4, 2006

ATHENS — The Georgia football team began preparations on Monday for its first Southeastern Conference game of the season by practicing for 90 minutes at the Woodruff Practice Fields.

Georgia (1-0, 0-0) will visit South Carolina (1-0, 1-0) on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C. Last Thursday, the Gamecocks opened the year with a 15-0 victory on the road against Mississippi State. Two days later, the Bulldogs kicked off with a 48-12 victory against Western Kentucky.

"We know it's going to be a huge challenge going to South Carolina," said Bulldogs tight end Coleman Watson, who caught a touchdown pass against the Hilltoppers. "Their crowd is always into it. South Carolina has great speed and athletic ability on defense. It's going to be a tough game for us."

Georgia coach Mark Richt said it was important for his team to file away the Western Kentucky game and start getting ready for the Gamecocks.

"We need to have a good week of preparation, and it starts with today," Richt said. "I thought the guys showed a lot of energy and a lot of focus today. We did some good things against Western Kentucky, but we also did some bad things. The players know that, and they came out today ready to work hard and correct their mistakes."

Before practice, Richt excused one of the Scholar Dog Teams from having to go through the team's agility drills. The Bulldogs are broken into the Scholar Dog Teams, and one group per week will be rewarded for its success in the classroom. On Monday, the players excused from the agility drills were Tripp Chandler, Josh Davis, Marquis Elmore, Bo Fowler, Kelin Johnson, Jeremy Lomax, Justin Lyles, Casey Nickols, Matthew Stafford, Seth Watts and Des Williams.
