ATHENS – Coming into fall camp, Brannan Southerland was worried about his surgically repaired shoulder. Suddenly, he’s the only healthy fullback Georgia has.

For the last two days, Brannan Southerland has been backed up in practice by walk-on Stephen White due to injuries to Jason Johnson (ankle) and Des Williams (knee). Johnson and Williams are hoping to be back at practice Monday.

Until then, Southerland can carry the load. That’s something he was worried about after missing all of spring practice.

“My shoulder has been amazing,” he said. “I always hoped it would be back to normal, and to tell you the truth, it doesn’t even feel like it’s had surgery. The first couple days I could tell but then it felt like it strengthened right up.”

Southerland was named Georgia’s offensive newcomer of the year last year after starting every game at fullback as a redshirt freshman. He finished with 18 carries for 26 yards and eight catches for 57 yards and excelled as a blocking back.

“He should be more confident,” Coach Mark Richt said. “It’s hard to get much stronger than he was last year, but I think he is a little stronger.”

This year, Southerland is completely comfortable with the Bulldogs’ offense but is having to adjust to first-year position coach Tony Ball.

“Coach Ball has come in and given me some new things to work on as far as working with my hands a little more in blocking and some of the footwork is a little different,” he said. “I’m definitely working on some news things I haven’t been told to focus on before in my playing days. Overall, my camp has been a good camp. I’m still working for it to be a great fall.”
