2006 Fall Camp: Day 14 Practice Report

Posted Aug 21, 2006

ATHENS - With what Georgia coach Mark Richt called "the pecking order" in place for the quarterbacks, the Bulldogs went through a two-hour practice session in full pads on Monday at the Woodruff Practice Fields.

On Sunday night, Richt announced that senior Joe Tereshinski will start the Bulldogs' season opener against Western Kentucky. Richt further stated that redshirt freshman Joe Cox is No. 2, and sophomore Blake Barnes and freshman Matthew Stafford are co-No. 3s on the depth chart.

Richt said he was pleased with the way each player handled the news and the way they approached Monday's practice.

"The focus was outstanding," Richt said. "I really liked the way they responded. Nobody was bent out of shape or had his head down. They did really, really well today. I didn't see any negative body language or sourpuss faces. They all had good days."

Richt said Tereshinski took all the snaps with the first unit, while the other three quarterbacks rotated with the second unit.

Tereshinski, an Athens native, is a three-year contributor with one start coming in the 2005 game against Florida in Jacksonville. For his career, he is 25-for-49 for 371 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The third generation Bulldog also has helped the team with his play on special teams.

"His teammates respect Joe T. as a leader and as a Bulldog who loves this program," Richt said. "They know he will do whatever it takes to win. Joe is relaxed and confident. He knows what's expected of him."

Tereshinski said he will not rest on his laurels and will keep working hard.

"For me, I've got to keep watching film and play mistake-free football," Tereshinski said. "I've got to stay ahead mentally. The competition isn't over."

Richt announced to the team before practice that junior running back Jason Johnson has been placed on scholarship. Johnson is a native of Chicago.

"The scholarship was well earned by J.J.," Richt said. "He has played tailback, he has played fullback and he has helped us on special teams. He has been very productive. He's a hard worker. And he's done extremely well as a student."
