G-Day to Benefit Local Charity

Posted Apr 5, 2006

ATHENS - The University of Georgia will continue one of its long-standing traditions this weekend, as proceeds from G-Day, the annual spring football game, will be presented to a local charity. This year¹s recipient is the Georgia Unit of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D).

RFB&D, which has 29 local units nationwide, was founded in 1948 to provide recorded educational textbooks to veterans blinded in WWII who wanted to attend college under the GI Bill of Rights. Since that time, RFB&D¹s membership, programs and services have expanded and diversified and nowserves all people with print disabilities. The Georgia Unit Outreach Department is currently serving 265 institutional sites and approximately 6,300 individual members.

³The UGA Athletic Association is very proud to recognize RFB&D as the 2006 G-Day beneficiary," said Director of Athletics Damon Evans. "This organization makes a significant impact nationally, as well as locally through the good work of the Georgia unit right here in Athens. We are hopeful that the proceeds from the G-Day Game will enhance this cause."

Previous G-Day beneficiaries include the Athens Child Abuse Council, the Samaritan Counseling Center, the Athens-Clarke County Mentor Program, the Athens Homeless Shelter, St. Mary's Hospital, the United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Safe Campuses Now and the Athens YMCA.

The G-Day Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 8, at Sanford Stadium at noon. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $2 for youth 18 and under. Holders of UGA, G-Club and Letterman IDs will be granted free admission. Tickets are available in person at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall the week of April 3-7 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or at the gate the day of the game. Cash only will be accepted for tickets.
