ATHENS – Georgia safety Kelin Johnson joined Bulldog graduate assistant Tyson Summers in the film room two to three times a week during the offseason.

The skull sessions have paid off, Coach Mark Richt said.

“The thing I like about Kelin Johnson is he will hit you,” Richt said. “I can count on him to strike with some attitude. Donavon (Baldwin) and (C.J.) Byrd are still feeing their way around a little bit. Kelin is a little more confident about what to do. You can see him playing more aggressively.”

Johnson will replace Greg Blue at starting safety this season. Blue was the Bulldogs’ third straight first-team All-American at the position, which leaves Johnson with big shoes to fill.

“I just want to be known as a playmaker,” Johnson said. “I don’t care how that is.”

Johnson, a junior, played in all 13 games last year and had 14 tackles.
