Sugar Bowl: 12/28 News and Notes

ATLANTA - News and notes from Georgia's Sugar Bowl practices.

OTHER INJURIES: Linebacker Brandon Miller (sprained knee) practiced in a green, no-contact jersey Wednesday, but that was just a clerical error. Miller wasn’t supposed to be in green, Richt said, and will be a full speed for the Sugar Bowl, linebackers coach John Jancek said.

Still, Danny Verdun Wheeler may take the starting spot on the strongside with Miller coming off the bench.

“Danny’s been there the last eight practices and he’s done a good job,” Jancek said.

Tight end Martrez Milner has an injured shoulder but is expected to play.

Also, redshirt freshman defensive end Jeremy Lomax, who suffered a high ankle sprain against Mississippi State and missed the rest of the season, has suffered another setback. Lomax, who was named the Bulldogs’ biggest surprise of spring practice last year, will need shoulder surgery in the offseason and will miss spring practice this year.

PRACTICE REPORT: The Bulldogs worked out for nearly two hours early Wednesday at St. Pius X High School. The team battled light rain as it began but had a good workout, Richt said.

“I didn’t see anybody not having the right type of attitude toward their first practice,” he said.

It was the team’s first practice since the holiday break.

“I’m feeling really good,” quarterback D.J. Shockley said. “It’s good to be back around the team and to get ready for the Sugar Bowl.”

THIS AND THAT: Walk-on John DeGenova, a native of New Orleans, was given the team’s Block of Granite Award, which goes to the most reliable walk-on. DeGenova also is a Foundation Fellow at the school. … Quarterback D.J. Shockley has been named a finalist for the FCA Bobby Bowden Award. … The team was scheduled to eat at the Brazilian restaurant Fogo de Chao on Wednesday night.
